On the first Tuesday of every month, an intrepid group of Ashland readers meets at noon to talk about the best books they've read during the month. These are their stories. [Cue CSI Theme Music]
Notes
Bonnie read this while she awaits her reserve of "A Long Petal of the Sea." She is an avid reader of Allende's work and doesn't consider it her best, suggesting that the translation could be at fault. There are a lot of moving parts in this story of a Polish girl and a Japanese boy, the impacts that WWII has on them, and their love story. It had some nice twists at the end that were worth waiting for.

Claudia had been struggling to remember a title that your faithful chronicler forgot to record from last week that Bill had talked about. Bill wasn't present today but Cathy remembered. Here's Bill's comfort read for posterity!
Notes
Claudia is still on an Alice Munro kick!

Kristin mentioned that she'd read this and that it had interesting thirtysomething angst AND elements of the children's book The Westing Game. She thought it was a fun read.

Notes
Cathy had waited for this one to come in and was just starting it.

Wendy also read this one and there was some conversation about Elizabeth Gilbert's other marriages.

We did a speed round...this was Rad's second pick which he enjoyed!
Notes
We talked about the similarities and differences of Bryson and Roach...this is probably the closest of hers to The Body...and Bryson mentions this book in his discussion of the digestive system in his book.

Kristin said it was a bit jarring to read this book at this exact time (for those reading this list in the future, we are in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak at the moment) but that Bryson's approach to nonfiction with his deft touch at humor was enjoyable. Bonnie agreed. They both enjoyed this title on audio.

Notes
Cathy read about this title in Book Page and enjoyed it. This tale of two police officers and their families and the impacts on their lives of a catastrophic event instigated by the mentally ill wife of one of the families had redemption at the end.

Series
Olive novels volume 2
Notes
Wendy read us some excerpts from this book. She really enjoyed the portrayal of the eighty-something main character and felt like the portrayal was very in keeping with her own experience of being this age.

Notes
Because of the heavy subject matter of The Great Believers, A Little Life was invoked to very polarized reactions. Many in the group have read this one and either loved it or hated it.

Notes
Claudia read this after hearing about it last month and enjoyed all the layers and discussion of the early years of the AIDS epidemic.

Bonnie shared that this is her very favorite of Allende's works!
