Led to the Sans Souci Hotel, the duo encounters a mysterious host, a group of unfriendly guests, and reports of a missing girl. But when Tommy also disappears, Tuppence suspects that something sinister is taking place within the hotel.

After Tommy and Tuppence Beresford move into an old house, they discover a message concerning the death of a woman who had once lived there.
